SearXNG
Search that does not watch you
A metasearch engine: it queries Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia and dozens of others on your behalf and merges the results, without cookies, tracking or a profile. Set it as your browser's default and every search leaves from this box instead of from you.

Open the dashboard, find it in the App Store and press Install. Or from a terminal on the box:
sudo homebox install searxng
Where to open it
| Service | Port | First login |
|---|---|---|
| SearXNG | :8088 | No account of any kind — it opens straight into the search box. |
Open it at your box's address with that port — the dashboard links to it directly once it is running.
Good to know
- Add it to Firefox or Chrome as a search engine with the URL http://<this box>:8088/search?q=%s
- A brand new instance often gets NO RESULTS at first, and that is the engines, not this. DuckDuckGo and Brave answer an unfamiliar instance with a CAPTCHA — seen on a fresh install here — and SearXNG reports it honestly rather than pretending. It settles as the instance is used; meanwhile turn the sulking engines off in Preferences and lean on the ones that answer
- Check which engine failed and why under Preferences then Engines, or in the log: homebox logs searxng
- The secret key is generated at install and signs the preference cookies; it is not a login
- There is no account and no history. Settings are a cookie in your own browser, so they do not follow you to another device
