Valheim

A world that survives the host logging off

A dedicated Valheim server. Hosting from inside the game means the world ends when that player quits and their character has to be there for anyone to play; a dedicated server means the world simply exists, and anyone can drop in and keep building.

Installing it

Open the dashboard, find it in the App Store and press Install. Or from a terminal on the box:

sudo homebox install valheim

Good to know

• Valheim is genuinely memory hungry — 4GB is a floor, not a suggestion, and a large world with several players wants more
• The server password must be at least five characters and cannot contain the server name, or the server refuses to start and says very little about why
• Ports 2456 to 2458 are UDP. Only 2456 is the game; the others are the Steam query protocol that makes it findable
• Worlds are in the module config under worlds_local. Back them up: Valheim corrupting a world on an unclean shutdown is not unheard of
